Week 13 – Weeds ‘n’ Things

See what I was up to during week 13; yes, I know this is late but as the saying goes, “Better late than never” 🙂

This past week has been on the busy side. Had to replace the wax ring on my toilet (also finally got around to installing the hand-held bidet I bought last year), the weeds are taking over faster than I can get rid of them (see photos below). You may think you have weeds if you get some dandelions showing up amongst your grass…we have some of them, but with the winds (and bird poop) we get lots of other pretty, and nasty, stuff.

Speaking of wind, my poor Iceland Poppies are having a heck of a time standing up after blooming; I had taken to cutting them off and bringing them in the house, but then I want to bees to enjoy them too…such is my dilemma. On the plus side I have been enjoying taking kaleidoscope photos of them, I won’t bore you with all of them, just posting 2 recent photos.

I did make time to do some digital creating. I finished with April’s Digital Journal/Planner and exported it, I also got around to making a Digital Art Tag…couldn’t decide which color I liked so I’m showing both versions and will let you decide. Please comment below whether you like the blue version or the orange brown version.

And, finally, I got a new LensBaby lens…the Velvet 28. I’ve been enjoying playing with it, but it is a lot heavier than I was expecting. Since I’ve been using my iPhone for photography since last October, my wrist and thumb are not used to holding/using my Fuji XT-3 and lens combinations; I’m trying to slowly change that. I also finally got around to playing with the Creative Bokeh optic that I bought a couple of years ago and never tried out – it’s lots of fun. Stay tuned for the LensBaby post with samples.

Now, on to the photos…

Weeds, Weeds, and More Weeds!

Backyard Weeds
weeds, weeds, and more weeds!

As you can see from the photo in the upper right hand corner we have weeds that look like lettuce, don’t let their innocent look fool you…they get mean and nasty as they get bigger, and then they bite when you try to remove them! Upper Left and Lower Right photos are another type of weed we have. They have pretty purple flowers, which I don’t mind, but after that they turn into the pitchforks you see above…and wait a little longer and those spikes dry out and turn into convoluted arrows that stick to your clothes and shoes! I had to throw in a dandelion seed head, just because!

I’m just amazed at the beautiful colors of flowers my 2 plants kick out! On one plant there is a white flower and an orange flower; the other plant has 3 peachy colors and 1 orange…well, they did. With the wind lots of petals have been shed. 😦

Digital Art Tags

I Create - Blue
I Create - Orange Brown

Here are the 2 digital art tags I created. I used elements from The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site. Objects from Architecture 1 Bundle were used to create the background and the cool guy is from the Steampunk Aesthetic Bundle. Almost forgot, the blueprint digital paper is from Creative Fabrica.

That’s all for Week 13. Yes, I’m late in posting this, but I finally got it done! Thank you for taking time to read this post, view the photos and comment with you choice of tag. Please stay safe!

Week 12 – Update

I can’t believe that 3 weeks have gone flying by. I’ve been working on creating my monthly digital planners and figuring out how to link up the pages in Affinity Publisher. It was pretty easy, actually…just time consuming. I also created a contact-less birthday card for my step-sisters upcoming birthday. I’ve been deep diving into Affinity Designer and its features. Away from the computer I’ve been busy pulling weeds.

Bling Saucer Magnolia

Magnolia

Gardens of the World has 6 to 10 Saucer Magnolia trees close to the Mission, I had never noticed them before, but was jumping up and down with joy walking on the pathway between the beautiful pink flowers in bloom. I decided to bling out one of the photos in Affinity Photo.

Experimental Flower

Digital Flower

While playing around in Affinity Designer I came up with this vector digital flower. This is still a work in progress as I work on the pattern in the yellow center. It started with 1 “flower” which got “power duplicated” which gave half of the look; I grouped the flowers, duplicated the group and rotated the new pattern to fill out the open white space.
I was also playing around with some other features of Affinity Designer and was looking to post it here, but I couldn’t find the file. If I ever find it, or re-create it, I’ll post it here.

Birthday Card

Birthday Card

My step-sister has a birthday coming up. Above is the digital card I made (minus the sentiment) and animated. What you can’t see from the above photo is that the small square on the front of the card opens and reveals a birthday quote. I also didn’t show the digital envelope.
One of the things I started playing around with in Affinity Designer is Symbols; most people use them to create patterns, I figured out how to use them in my card making. What a difference and time saver it makes! At some point there will be a tutorial on how to use symbols.

Logic vs Imagination

Digital Art Tag

I restarted my membership with The Graphics Fairy again. Using some of their “Steampunk” resources I created the above tag in Affinity Photo on my iPad Pro. The quote, “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” was created in JixiPix’s Rip Studio on my MacBook Pro. Oh, and the 3 buttons are from Imaginarium Vintage Junk Graphics bought from Design Cuts; which, by the way, is where I got the first part of my name from.

Well…that’s all for this week. Thank you very much for visiting. Stay safe and healthy.

Week 9 – Finished Project

I can’t believe that 2 weeks have passed since my last post. I completed the contact-less greeting card for my cousin and started working on a new digital art journal piece – not sure why I didn’t post the WIP last week. I also can’t believe that it took me over a week to complete this piece…but it did (since I can’t work on projects all day), and I’m loving it!

About This Piece:
The background was made from scratch using only digital brushes
The “times” were made with a font called Technology
The pocket watch is part of a product called Round Mechanical Banner on Green Background (Steampunk)
When I had a membership with The Graphics Fairy I had downloaded the Eclectic Steampunk SVG Kit (that’s where I got the elements for my header and what I used in this piece) they also have some free Steampunk Brushes here
The title was created in JixiPix’s Rip Studio Pro

I had an idea for a new digital art journal piece so I created a “stencil” for when I’m ready to start on it. When I look at the time throughout the day I will often see one or more of the numbers in the stencil; years ago I went by the name 8:25 Photography as I was seeing that time very frequently, it is also my birth date…8/25.

Stencil for Upcoming Digital Art Journal Piece

Since my last post earlier this week I started on a second digital greeting card for my cousins upcoming birthday. She loves mermaids and sea life. I created the dolphin in Daz Studio and used digital assets from DesignCuts, DesignBundles, and Creative Fabrica. The card is created in Affinity Designer using vector shapes, then the assets are added on different layers. I have it set up as a tri-fold card and the front banner will lift up out of the way when I animate the pieces.

Things have been going smoothly since my last post. Today I made another trip to the laundromat and it went much better than my first trip there. I Got some good news today…the new washer and dryer are ready for delivery, I set up an installation date for next week so I can do more cleaning in the garage before they get here.

Last night I put the finishing touches on the digital art journal page after creating the text “sticker” in Art Text 4 and adding the white outline and shadow in Affinity Photo on my Mac. The background designs were created with 4 different stencils I created and various “Artista Brushes” in the iPad version of Affinity Photo. The brush set was one of the free gifts with the 1.9 update from last week. I noticed that DesignCuts is selling the brush set for $20. Prior to the 1.9 update, I had downloaded some sponge brushes from Brusheezy and that’s what I use around the edges of the digital art journal and tag pieces.

Talk Is Cheap - Final
Final – A Bird in Hand…

Today I finished animating my dads birthday card in Keyshape and combining the files in iMovie. Below is what the card looks like closed, partially open, fully open, and the envelope front with the inside flap showing above. I left the sentiment out of the image, but I found the poem at BirthdayMessages.net.

So this week was much more quiet than the previous month. I had my first visit to a laundromat in over 40+ years; that was an experience I’d rather not talk about (LOL). I started re-working something I started as a digital greeting card and I also started working on my dads birthday card, a first for me (not waiting until the last minute to start a project) .

WIP - A Bird in the Hand...
WIP – A Bird in the Hand…

The best part of the week was Thursday as Affinity (Serif) released version 1.9 of all 3 programs (Photo, Designer, and Publisher). My most wished for feature was included in this version – being able to save my “Workspace”. Yes, I know its been available in a wide range of programs, but for some reason it wasn’t implemented in Affinity’s software. Now I can save a workspace for digital mixed media pieces (Photo), for greeting cards (Designer), and digital planner (Publisher).

Another cool feature is being able to sync your purchases amongst all (Affinity) programs and platforms (Mac, iOS, and/or Windows). Purchases are any assets bought through the Affinity store – fonts, brushes, textures, etc. This feature is only available once you register your program on whatever platform(s) you use; you also got to download new, *free* assets for all 3 programs.

Time to get back to work on my dads birthday card as I have 2 more to create for birthday’s this month. Thank you for visiting and stay safe…and healthy!

Well, this year isn’t starting out exactly as planned! Since my last post:
(1) The microwave went out in the middle of heating Eggplant Parmesan (had to get a new one)
(2) We were without electricity for around 40 hours during a fierce windstorm (did a minor digital detox during, then had to empty/throw away all the food in the fridge and clean it out after power was restored)
(3) The washing machine died last week and I’ve been having to do research and, finally, purchased a washer and dryer (our last pair were bought on the same day, so the dryer could be on its way out too – they were 15-20 years old)

On the positive side:
(1) I managed to create 2 digital mixed media tags
(2) Created more “digital stencils”
(3) Finally finished the digital planner I was working on (after several retakes) – I’ve cut it down to monthly planners as the file was huge!
(4) I’m alive!!!
(5) The Iceland Poppies are still blooming (despite getting the 5h*t kicked out of them during the wind storm)

Welcome Back – Hello 2021

I know I’ve been quiet since December 31st but I’ve been enjoying my time offline working on my digital planner. My first version…

Iceland Poppies 1

I know I’ve been quiet since December 31st but I’ve been enjoying my time offline working on my digital planner. My first version was being created in Affinity Publisher, but since I didn’t finish it in time I decided to do a 7-day trial of Zinnia Journal. While there were some aspects of the app that I did like, as far as creating a digital planner, there were features I didn’t like…like not being able to re-scale a block on only 1 side. So now I’m back in Affinity Publisher with a new layout for month, week, and daily journaling.

Since the beginning of the year I picked up 2 potted Iceland Poppies from Home Depot. I’m amazed at the different colors that are opening from a single plant. I thought I would only be getting orange flowers from one and yellow flowers from the other…but that hasn’t been the case! I’ve been enjoying taking photos of them pretty much every day but I’m showing only 9 of them. All of the photos were taken with my iPhone 11 Pro and processed in Photoshop Camera using the Neon Pulse Lens 2 of 3.

Iceland Poppies 2

Recently I started playing with Affinity Photo on my iPad Pro and have come up with this years project…digital art journaling – it’s a lot less messy than its analog version and I have quite the collection of digital assets. I will also be throwing together some tutorials on how to create a digital art journal/page using the iPad version of Affinity Photo, and possibly the slight difference of the desktop version. At the end of each month I might do a video flip through, with some projects having animated items…so stay tuned!

Talk Is Cheap

“Talk is Cheap” is my first “page” for the month/project since I’m getting a late start. I’m not sure how often I will post, but my plan is for a minimum of 2x a week, hopefully more.

Well my friends…this is it! The end of another 365 project. I want to thank you for your follows, comments, and likes over the past year; I appreciate each and every one of you. I’ve been having some issues with my MacBook Pro and plan on doing a factory restore today – I’m actually writing this the night before and will set this to publish today, the 31st.

This week is all about nature and using my Lensbaby Omni Filters with my iPhone. All photos are straight out of camera. With that said, on with the photos…

This week is all about statues; the first three are from last Thursday’s shopping trip. I wanted to get one this past Monday when I went for my weekly Chinese food, but there were too many people sitting too close to the statues…so I took one inside the restaurant. The last 3 photos are of Christmas statues that have been packed away, and that I brought out for Christmas.

Christmas day I had the best preset ever! After watching one of the recent LensBaby conference videos (before getting out of bed) I saw one of the presenters hand holding her Omni filters instead of using the screw on attachments; that gave me the idea to try it with my iPhone. After focusing on a subject and locking the Auto Focus, I placed a filter in front of the lens. When I saw the results my heart leapt in my chest. With that said, on with the photos…
