Yesterday I posted the image below on Instagram. It was created using last weekends freebie. When I created the texture, I knew that it was perfect for a map. So when I got some free time, I made my version of a map.
Beside the main texture, I needed some elements. I went through the few photos on my laptop and came across the water lily photo I took in Thailand with the Sony DSC-HX1 bridge camera.
I opened the photo in Affinity Photo, duplicated the layer, then set about playing with the Distort>Mirror Filter. I came up with 4 different kaleidoscope looks. Next I cut out the designs and pasted them into my new document with the texture layer.

My next step was converting the portion of the kaleidoscopes into black and white, then changing the blending modes and Opacity. I duplicated each element and made my own kaleidoscope image.

The last thing I added while still on my laptop, was the directions. I used American Typewriter font, and to create the gold foil look, I used gold foil, from my Foil Textures and created clipping masks. I then added a slight 3D effect to the letters.
I saved the file to iCloud and used my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to create the dotted “path”. I then drew the red “X” and drew a black outline around it. Guess I should mention I also have the iOS version of Affinity Photo.
